Octopuses only live a short time-depending on species, a maximum of five years. Montgomery leaves on an extended book tour, and when she returns, Octavia seems to have begun her descent into old age. Because an octopus’s arms contain many of its neurons, each arm almost has a brain of its own, and the suckers on its arms allow it to taste, feel, and grip things as well as analyze chemicals. Montgomery accompanies Octavia’s keeper, Bill Murphy, when he feeds her, and she interacts with the young octopus through touch. Octavia is initially shy and standoffish but soon warms to Montgomery. The aquarium acquires a new octopus, named Octavia, and Montgomery sets out to get to know her. After only a few visits, however, Athena unexpectedly dies. She is fascinated by what she learns about octopuses, which is quite different from the stereotypes and myths about them in popular culture. Montgomery begins by describing her brief interactions with an octopus named Athena at the New England Aquarium in Boston, Massachusetts.

In many palaces, such suites formed a long and flat scenery, while folding doors slid back almost to the walls on either side so that the view of the whole space was barely blocked. It was a voluptuous scene, that masquerade ball. It was by the end of the fifth or sixth month of his isolation, and even though the plague raged most violently, Prince Prospero decided to entertain a thousand of his friends by organizing a masquerade ball. All the fun was inside the high wall leaving the "Red Death" outside of it. There were dancers, comics, musicians, beauties, and wine. In order not to worry or think, the prince provided all the instruments for their pleasure. With such precautions, the courtiers could defy the plague. They were determined to neither go in nor go out if the impulses of despair or rage come within. The courtiers, entering, brought stoves and huge hammers and welded the bolts. It was surrounded by a strong and high wall with an iron gate. This was an extensive and majestic building, the product of the prince's own eccentric yet superb taste. When his kingdom was already half empty, he called a thousand good friends among the knights and ladies of his court and exited with them into the deep isolation of one of his castellated abbeys. But Prince Prospero was happy, fearless, and wise. A Brazilian terrain-mapping drone has detected a bizarre anomaly of otherworldly matter in the middle of the jungle, and, worse yet, the tell-tale chemical signature of the deadly microparticle. On the verge of being shut down, the project has registered no activity-until now. And the world thought it was safe…ĭeep inside Fairchild Air Force Base, Project Eternal Vigilance has continued to watch and wait for the Andromeda Strain to reappear. In the ensuing decades, research on the microparticle continued. In the moments before a catastrophic nuclear detonation, they succeeded. Over the next five days, a team of top scientists assigned to Project Wildfire worked valiantly to save the world from an epidemic of unimaginable proportions. Accidental exposure to the particle-designated The Andromeda Strain-killed every resident of the town of Piedmont, Arizona, save for an elderly man and an infant boy. In 1967, an extraterrestrial microbe came crashing down to Earth and nearly ended the human race. Fifty years after The Andromeda Strain made Michael Crichton a household name-and spawned a new genre, the technothriller-the threat returns, in a gripping sequel that is terrifyingly realistic and resonant. I hated him for electing Brokentail as deputy, knowing either way, Raggedpelt would die by the work of his son, but he could at least have left not leaving such an evil cat as leader. I hated him for not seeing what he was doing wrong, for asking for Yellowfang's help when it was already too late, already done. I hate Raggedstar for being so blind, so proud. I knew I'd be disappointed if I did, but even when I finished the book, I was disappointed. Somewhere around the time Yellowfang became a medicine cat, I wanted to give up on the book. But it was still weird seeing her so young and active and cheerful (most of the time). Reading about her not being grumpy let me understand why she became grumpy, considering all she'd been through. It was just mind-boggling.Īnd then there was Yellowfang. He could be so devastatingly sweet and charming and gentle and enigmatic, a mixture of beauty and pain, or he could be mean and cruel, unpredictable and volatile. I knew it was going to end, and I knew their history, but I never knew how devastating it truly was.įirst off, Raggedpelt/star was confusing. I love Raggedpelt, and I loved the relationship he had with Yellowfang. In the beginning, I was so in love with the book. He begins by telling us about his meeting with Charlie Veitch, once a well-known and influential 9/11 conspiracy theorist, who was viciously turned on by his online community of followers when he announced that he had changed his mind. McRaney explores both the why and the how of mind-changing. All of these people experienced situations that led them to question their own beliefs and those of the communities to which they belonged before they changed their minds.įor most people, however, especially those belonging to minority groups experiencing discrimination, and, of course, politicians and advertisers, the question is how to make others change their minds. It turns out that for some of the people whose stories science journalist David McRaney tells so empathetically, this should read ‘here’s why’. The blurb on the back of this book states: ‘Our most deeply held opinions and beliefs can change – here’s how.’ David McRaney explores how to convince people to change their views. Born in Canada’s Yukon Territory, they live in Vancouver, BC. Coyote is the author of five books, all published by Arsenal Pulp Press. By doing so, they help us to embrace not what makes us women or men, but human beings. Ivan excels at finding the small yet significant truths in our everyday gestures and interactions. With The Slow Fix, Ivan returns to their short story roots in a collection that is disarming, warm, and funny, while it at the same time subverts our preconceived notions of gender roles. Ivan’s most recent book, Bow Grip, was their first novel it was shortlisted for the Ferro-Grumley Prize for Women’s Fiction, was named a Stonewall Honor Book by the American Library Association, and won Canada’s ReLit Award for Best Novel of the Year. Coyote’s reports of this struggle are not only great stories, but a reminder of how truly the personal is political. Living a life that continually subverts social conventions around gender is damn hard work. Coyote featured insightful, deeply personal tales about gender, identity, and community, based on their own experiences growing up queer in Canada’s North. In The Slow Fix, Ivan Coyote reminds us that the small details of everyday life can be the stuff of high art. The first three story collections by Ivan E. ”Coyote is an important literary voice, blending a keen sense of gay identity and community with a refreshing appreciation for the goodness at the heart of some straight people.”- Out I think reviewers are mostly on point with some of these stories and because I started with the sequels by accident, I actually benefited from not having to power through as many others did. I mostly like the series, but I won't listen to them all. I think book 3 is completely optional and I listened to just half before calling it quits.
